So, the election is tomorrow. Who do you guys think is going to win? I dont think the NDP will form a majority government, neither will the Block, Rhinoceros, or the Marijuana party. So all thats left is the Liberals and the "New" Conservitive party. Whats your guys take on the outcome?

They won't form any majority governemnt. It will definately be a minority goverment headed by either Martin or Harper. I myself would rather see Harper win it because lately, Martin seems incompetent and desperate. Especially after his commercial of "Stephen Harper would have sent our troops to Iraq, he would have wasted billions on aircraft carriers and tanks." I myself would like to see our military expanded and those damned sea kings replaced.

Right now however, many people are estimating that the liberals will take it with the conservatives right behind.

I think (hope) the Liberal's will win. I'm going to be voting for the Green party. I was planning for a while on voting for the Liberal candidate in my riding, but after looking into her I realise I can't stand her. So I've gone back to my original preference, which is the Green party.

I'm predicting a slim majority for the Liberals. I think Martin's a complete douche bag, but I'd much rather see him stay in office than to have Harper elected. Really I'd rather see the NDP or the Greens form a minority government, but that's not really feasible. I'd be surprised if the Green party got any seats, actually.

The Bloc will have a strong showing in Quebec, of course, but won't be in any position to form government. They'll be in a better position than any of the other parties to form part of a coalition government if there's a minority result.

The NDP will take a few seats, but will remain largely insignificant.

The Marijuana Party, Canadian Action Party, etc. won't take any seats.

The Rhino party disbanded in 1993, so I don't know why they were brought up in this thread at all.

You have a "marijuana party"?

Is that their official name?

And they're big enough to be in the discussion before the elections?

Wow, your country is pretty fucking cool.

yea, they are the Marijuana Party of Canada. they're definitely not big enough to get any seats in this election, but i know that some Marijuana Party candidates had the chance to participate in debates in their ridings, so they can at least try to stir up some discussion.

i'm still thinking that there will be a minority Liberal government, but i s'pose there is still a chance for them to form a majority government. that would be really close though. i'll be voting Green or NDP; i guess i should decide soon.

Oh yea. They're Jolly Good fun.. emphasis on "Jolly".

They formed for the sole purpose of re-leagalizing marijuana. I heard in some ridings they're a close contender. Probably a small one.

Oh, and the Rhinoceros Party apparently is communist. Either them or the Marijuana Party would make the House of Commons really interesting. Plus I just plain like the sound of "The Rhinoceros Party".

Did you miss it the first time around? They haven't existed in more than a decade. They're not communists, they're a memory.

Edit: they were never communists anyway, they were artists satirising the political process. Their platform included paving Manitoba, flatening the Rockies, incorporating the US as our third territory so the average national temperature wouldn't be as low, banning winter, and breeding mosquitoes that would only be born in January in order that they would all freeze to death.

Theoretically, I support Liberals. It's just where I lie on the political spectrum.

Do I like the idea of Martin in power? Not really.
Do I want to take the chances of Harper? Not really.

The options seem a bit grim this time around, but I'd still have to stick to the principles and go with Liberals.

Of course, I can't even vote...

The Marijuana Party isn't anything to take seriously. They haven't got a hope in hell of winning a seat. Their only really potential purpose is to attract enough support that the more mainstream parties will finally get around to decriminalising (or better still legalising) pot. I say potential purpose, because other parties also campaign on this (NDP and Green) on top of more noteworthy issues (health care, education, etc.). We're a socially progressive enough country as it is, and despite pot still being illegal, it's almost unheard to be arrested for possession these days.

I don't mean to detract from the country's image, but the Marijuana Party is pretty irrelevant. Hell, I was almost a candidate for them in the last federal election.

Apparently the Block is going to have the ballance of power in a minority government. Just the thought of a sepratist party with that much power is frightening.

p.s., has anyone else noticed all the green party candidates look like homeless people?

Atlantic Canada is staying Liberal. Quel surprise.

Edit:

Everything's going more or less as I predicted, with one hilarious (and seemingly temporary, as it just chaged a minute or so ago) result:

The Marxist-Leninist Party was briefly in the lead in Mississauga East-Cooksville. Peter Mansbridge could barely keep a straight face while announcing it.

...And this is what you miss when you watch global.

The liberals appear to have taken a quick lead over the conservatives in Ontario, however polls have just started coming in. It looks like it is up to the praries to keep the conservatives on the liberals heels.

Looks like we're headed for a Liberal-NDP minority government... I'm surprised by how many votes the Liberals got in Ontario.

A marijuana party better never be taken seriously. There are way bigger fish to fry and anyone who is this hung up on the legalisation of marijuana doesn't deserve to be heard.

So, Liberal minority, eh guys?

Green didn't take any seats, but the numbers I saw said that they took 4.7% of the vote. I heard through other people that if a party takes more then 2% of the vote, they are eligible to some sort of funding. And since Green took more then 2%, they are eligible.
This I cannot confirm, since I just heard it through another person. Somebody can correct me on this one.

It looks screwed up again. Seeing how you need 155 seats to form a majority, it seems like the Liberal-NDP majority may not work out at this time, as they're one seat short (during the night, the Conservatives scraped a few of the NDP seats).

Even if the Bloc joined the Conservatives, there would be a 154-153 stalemate favoring the Liberals-NDP. It's odd to think that one man, the independant, could with the current votes choose between a liberal majority and an official stalemate.

Tartarus, those numbers are the popular vote. With the Green Party, in this case they have enough funding to work to get official party status. As the leader apparently said "We're going to now work 52 weeks, 24 hours a day to become an official party in Canada, now that we have the funding to do so."

The east went with the devil they know, the west wanted a new administration, and Ontario is afraid of the west.

Technically, the west actually broke up the 'new administration.' Infact, it was British Columbia which messed up Stephen Harper's intentions in the first place.

I liked the quote made by one reporter, it's unfortunate I can not recall it at the moment.

Harper had this one in the bag in beginning...but his team couldn't keep their mouth shut, and so he's left with little because he couldn't organzie the troops, much like Mario Dumont and the ADQ during the provincial elections we had last year.
